Records of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine are from both official and non-official bodies, including Office of the Dean, departments, committees, and organizations. A considerable part of the records consists of correspondence files of Deans T. H. Chandler, E. H. Smith, and L. Mine, and pertain to administration of the school, relations with the Harvard Medical School and Harvard University, as well as special events, such as the work of Varaztad Kazanjian and the Harvard Surgical Unit during World War I. Also includes correspondence with faculty and alumni, Dental School committees, hospitals, and professional societies; manuscripts of speeches and articles of Smith and Miner, and a scrapbook belonging to Chandler. Other administrative materials are executive committee records, 1895-1917; administrative board minutes, 1917-1944; and faculty minutes, 1867-1899. Student records include grades, entrance examinations, registration cards, applications, letters of recommendation, and matriculation registers. Financial records, 1906-1944, such as cash and expense books, and some legal documents are also in the collection. Records of departments include outgoing correspondence, 1910-1922, of the Chemistry Department; patient records and registers, 1868-1938, from the Operative Department; financial ledgers from Prosthetic and Photographic Departments; and statistical reports of departments, 1894-1907. Also includes student biographical material from Quinquennial Office; library accession books and circulation records; Dental Museum catalogs of specimens and lists of curators; committee records, such as minutes, concerning admission, curriculum, fellowships, and faculty; and records of the Harvard-Tufts Training School for Dental Hygienists, dating from 1917 to 1919. Collection contains publications of the Dental School, including reports for the Commission on Dental Accreditation (1981), regulations, and anniversary reports; as well as some publications by faculty members. Material about Medical School societies includes constitution and bylaws, minutes and reports, correspondence, and programs from the Harvard Odontological Society, Harriett Newell Lowell Society for Dental Research, and Harvard Dental Alumni Association. Other non-official papers include student notes, theses, and examinations; alumni biographical cards of classes of 1869 to 1927; and medical photographs. Graduate and postgraduate student theses from the Dental School are also available in the Archives.

The Harvard Dental School was founded in 1867 by the Harvard Corporation. Early deans of the school were Nathan Cooley Keep (1868-1872), Thomas Barnes Hitchcock (1872-1874), Thomas H.
